Abu Saleem among six convicted in Mumbai bomb blasts
New Delhi (June 17, 2017): A Special Terrorism And Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act court convicted Abu Saleem among six accused in the March 1993 Mumbai blasts which claimed 257 lives and left 713 seriously injured.
The court convicted Abu Salem, Mustafa Dossa, Feroz Abdul Rashid Khan, Taher Merchant, Riyaz Siddiqui and Karimulla Khan in the blasts case. While Abdul Quyyum was acquitted of all charges. The court ordered his release on personal bond.
The court has set the next hearing date on June 19 to decide the date for argument on the quantum of sentence. The accused face multiple charges including criminal conspiracy, waging war against the Government of India and murder under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act (TADA). The accused are also charged under sections of the Indian Explosives Act and Explosive Substances Act.
The six are the second group to be tried in the blasts. More than 100 people were found guilty in the main trial that ended in 2006. Eleven people were sentenced to death and the rest received various jail terms and fines.
